Money-in-politics Reporter
OpenSecrets is looking for a meticulous reporter with proven experience using data to craft stories with wide audience appeal — someone who wants to break national news on a range of money-in-politics issues and help grow the engaged audience of the award-winning OpenSecrets News.
The money-in-politics reporter, in conjunction with the editorial and investigations manager and other team members, helps to mentor a revolving team of journalism interns and teach them the ins and outs of political reporting and data journalism.
This person will also assist with editing other writers’ stories for the OpenSecrets website and creating data visualizations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior journalism or writing experience, experience working with data, and excellent writing, research, editing and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in AP Style, experience in online publishing and should have a good understanding of the U.S. political system.
- Sound knowledge of analytics tools and data viz software such as Flourish, DataWrapper, LucidChart, Canva and/or Infogram is ideal.
- Strong communications skills, especially for external audiences, including digital media and public speaking ability.
- Self-starting, well-organized and detail-oriented with exemplary organizational acumen and well-developed multitasking skills.
- A commitment to OpenSecrets’ mission and values, best practices in media and an interest in emerging trends.
COMPENSATION:
- The salary range for this position is $50,000–$58,000/year, based on experience and qualifications.
- We are a fully remote organization and this person can be based anywhere in the U.S.

Lead Developer
General Job Description: Takes the lead—working closely with our Web Content Manager and Information Technology Director—in architecting, managing, documenting, developing, testing, and debugging various Ruby and Vue applications. Writes software that helps process and present data across a multitude of data sources and projects.
DUTIES:
- Responsible for the architecture of our Ruby on Rails / Vue web applications;
- Develops and documents new features and functionality across a range of web applications;
- Writes tests to ensure proper functionality of our apps;
- Responsible for upgrading web application to newer versions Ruby and Ruby on Rails and Vue;
- Coordinates with content providers to migrate content from our PhP site to our Ruby on Rails based platform;
- Builds interfaces and software that work with large datasets in SQL and No-SQL.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expertise with the Ruby on Rails web framework
- Expertise with the Vue front-end framework
- Expertise with web technologies, such as Javascript, JQuery, HTML and CSS
- Experience with APIs and REST applications
- Experience with multiple programming languages: PHP, Python, Ruby, Javascript (including Node.js)
- Experience with Git and version control
- Desire to solve complex problems employing datastores such as MSSQL, MongoDB and MySQL, MSSQL
- Enthusiastic about big data and the political process
- Comfortable working in a collaborative, agile work environment with frequent changes
- Project management skills
- Excellent communication skills
