The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) seeks a student to work as a summer intern with our Evaluation & Learning (E&L) department, which is responsible for measuring the impact of IRAP’s work through data collection and analysis and using findings to support internal strategy and decision making. Candidates can apply to work remotely or from IRAP’s office in either Washington D.C. or New York City.
This role will involve supporting IRAP’s collection and management of data, data quality support, data analysis and creating internal and external summary reports that support our research and evaluation goals. The intern will also support the E&L team’s research work by undertaking desk research, analysis of secondary datasets, and report writing. This internship is a great opportunity for students both interested in legal aid, social work, human rights, migration, and international affairs, and seeking experience in evaluation and research in the NGO space.
Possible Responsibilities
- Support IRAP’s client feedback systems, including:
- Support IRAP’s data quality and analysis across the organization, including:
- Support desk research on topics related to displacement and immigration trends and policies.
- General support for Evaluation and Learning Department on other projects (e.g. Theory of Change (TOC) development, internal and external reporting, mapping out tracking needs for new work)
a. Conduct feedback phone interviews with clients, using interpreters as necessary.
b. Coordinate weekly translation and review of client feedback responses.
c. Support implementing improvements to IRAPs client feedback tools and processes
a. Review data in our systems for accuracy and completeness
b. Update and clean records and data sets
c. Compile summary reports
d. Conduct basic qualitative and quantitative analysis on data sets
Requirements
- Experience in roles communicating directly with clients or customers (this includes roles in customer service).
- Experience with or knowledge of trauma-informed best practices for interviewing clients preferred.
- Experience or comfort communicating with interpreters preferred.
- Experience with data entry and cleaning.
- Experience handling large datasets and basic to intermediate skills in data analysis preferred.
- Values, Competencies and Skills:
- Extremely detail oriented.
- Ability to handle information with high standards of confidentiality and privacy.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
- Comfort with form builders and database/CRM/case management systems preferred (Salesforce is ideal).Strong interest in refugee processing, immigration law, human rights, and evaluation.
- Knowledge or experience of trauma-informed best practices for interviewing clients preferred.
- Comfort or experience communicating with interpreters preferred.
- Ability to speak English and a second language (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Somali, Pashto, Tigrinya, Kurdish, or Spanish) at or above professional working proficiency (ILR 3) highly preferred.
Education:
Preferred Graduate student studying Non Profit Evaluation, Public Administration, Data Analytics or Statistics, Public Policy or similar is preferred, or undergraduate student with relevant education and experience.
Experience:
Internship-related Requirements
- This internship can be in-person in Washington, DC or New York City, or remote.
- This is a full-time internship and requires a 10-week commitment.
- Must have work authorization in the United States for application for an internship.
- This internship doesn’t require in-office availability.
Compensation/School Credit
IRAP can host interns/externs in two ways:
-Paid internship where students are compensated $16 per hour (or intern’s state minimum wage to be applied) for 40 hours per week;
-Non-compensated positions for academic credit(s) (must be coordinated in collaboration with an applicant’s school).
Internship and externship candidates will be considered equally.
Duration
This is a full-time position and requires a 10-week commitment beginning on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, with an onboarding week (May 27-30) in IRAP’s New York office. If you are only able to work part-time (for example, if you are a part-time student) or are unable to begin on May 27th, please still apply, and we will review your application.
