About our organization:

Democracy Works is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that collaborates with election officials, leading tech platforms, and world-class partners to drive voter access and participation. We help Americans vote by providing reliable, useful voting guidance through the sites, apps and groups they trust. This includes TurboVote, Democracy Works Election Data, the Voting Information Project (VIP), and Ballot Scout. We also co-founded the Civic Alliance alongside the CAA Foundation. Democracy Works is committed to diversity and inclusion in everything we do and aspires to have a team that's representative of the voters we serve.

The impact you’ll make:

Our Data and Outreach team coordinates with state and local election offices to publish nationally-standardized information about where and how to vote—data that powers everything from Google’s polling place search to our text message and email reminders to TurboVote users. The Seasonal Data and Outreach Fellows will work with the Voting Information Project team for the 2024 election cycle, assisting with collecting, cleaning, and ensuring the accuracy of a nation’s worth of election data.

As a Data and Outreach Fellow, you will:

  • Conduct online research, along with phone and email outreach to local election administrators, to get accurate, up-to-date information on elections
  • Keep notes on your progress and regularly update project trackers
  • Complete detailed data entry via custom forms and spreadsheets
  • Perform quality assurance checks on the information to assure accuracy and completeness of the data
  • Participate in team meetings, raise questions, and discuss nuances to ensure data is entered appropriately
  • Investigate partner and user-reported errors
  • Assist the team with other tasks, as they arise

You may also have the opportunity to:

  • Work with Democracy Works technical staff to organize elections data submitted by state and local election office
  • Assist in identifying and developing ways to improve project processes
  • Monitor news for reports of late-breaking changes to polling places

You are:

  • Extremely attentive to details
  • Proficient at working with data
  • Excellent at communicating, particularly by email and telephone
  • Able to organize non-centralized, non-standard information into a coherent format
  • Knowledgeable on a basic level of American politics, elections, and/or election administration
  • Skilled at managing competing priorities
  • Happy to pitch in wherever help is needed

You have experience:

  • Conducting concise, clear phone and email outreach with a specific ask
  • Communicating across different areas of expertise and working in teams
  • Working on tight deadlines and quickly turning around deliverables
  • Working with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Airtable, or other data management software
  • Working remotely as part of a distributed team

We also have regular operating hours (10 am to 6 pm Eastern, Monday to Friday).

For those who prefer to work from an office, we are headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. We are happy to share more details about the office, including accessibility information, as on-site visits are planned.
