  • California-specific: $81,000- $95,000
  • NYC-specific: $90,000- 95,000

Offers will vary based on experience and location-based cost-of-living calculations.

Democracy Works is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that collaborates with election officials, leading tech platforms, and world-class partners to drive voter access and participation. We help Americans vote by providing reliable, useful voting guidance through the sites, apps and groups they trust. This includes TurboVote, Democracy Works Election Data, the Voting Information Project (VIP), and Ballot Scout. We also co-founded the Civic Alliance alongside the CAA Foundation. The impact you’ll make:

Every year, thousands of elections happen across the United States. The Election Research team works to provide data and guidance for users, partners, and voters so they have the information needed to register and vote. As part of a highly collaborative team, you'll provide leadership and direction that ensures our election information is accurate, helpful, and timely.

You will:

  • Manage staff who own their portfolio of research, coaching them to navigate, prioritize, and execute research projects effectively
  • Plan and facilitate research projects, which includes new and expanded data and guidance

In collaboration with the Election Research Director, ensure all data in the pipeline is researched, reviewed (including QA), and published in a timely manner

  • Manage the local election office data set and ensure it is maintained and QA’d regularly
  • Oversee cross-functional response and collaborate with internal stakeholders to address and resolve data-related incidents
  • In collaboration with the Election Research Director, coordinate recruitment, onboarding, training, leadership development, and retention of staff
  • Provide ongoing training, direction, and performance reviews to staff you manage as necessary
  • Cross-functionally support relationships with major publishing partners
  • Execute on other tasks as may be assigned

You are someone with:

  • 2+ years of experience working in elections, civic tech, or government
  • 1+ years of experience managing or supervising others
  • An aptitude for coaching and mentoring people and teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfort using, handling, and manipulating data using spreadsheets with intermediate to advanced skills (including VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables)
  • A passion for and commitment to strong and effective teamwork
  • Comfort and familiarity working on, or adjacent to, the development of technology

It’s a plus if:

  • You have experience working with election data
  • You have experience ​working collaboratively with stakeholders, both internally and externally

How we work

Because elections take place everywhere, our employees work from all across the country. We embrace working remotely as the default. Our positions require regular, daily use of a computer (including the use of G-Suite and Slack) to conduct work and communicate with colleagues. We also have regular operating hours (10 am to 6 pm Eastern, Monday to Friday).

For those who prefer to work from an office, we are headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. We are happy to share more details about the office, including accessibility information, as on-site visits are planned.

There may be travel for occasional staff retreats or meetings as part of certain roles.
